How Australian take-home pay is calculated (2026-27)

Take-home pay = gross income − income tax (after LITO) − Medicare levy (− HECS/HELP if applicable) (− salary sacrifice). Super guarantee is paid by your employer on top of salary at 12%.

  • Income tax uses ATO marginal brackets (including the 15% lower bracket for 2026-27)
  • Medicare levy is generally 2% of taxable income
  • HECS/HELP uses marginal repayment rates above the threshold

Worked example: $90,000 annual salary

  1. Enter $90,000 annually with the 2026-27 tax year selected.
  2. Review income tax, Medicare levy, and net pay.
  3. Toggle HECS to see compulsory student loan repayments.
  4. Compare weekly / fortnightly / monthly breakdowns.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tax year does this pay calculator use?
You can toggle between recent Australian financial years. Rates for 2026-27 include the 15% lower tax bracket and current Medicare / HECS settings.
Does take-home pay include super?
Super guarantee is usually paid on top of your salary, not deducted from take-home. Salary sacrifice into super does reduce take-home pay.
Is HECS included?
Yes — enable HECS/HELP to estimate compulsory repayments based on your repayment income.
Is this official ATO advice?
No. It is a free estimate based on published ATO rates. For lodging a return, use ATO tools or a registered tax agent.
